The Marvyn Novick Legacy Planning Group

In the summer of 2016, a group of family, friends and colleagues of Marvyn Novick (1940-2016) organized a celebration of his life that took place on November 1st at the YWCA in Toronto and was attended by more than 150 people who knew Marvyn in various capacities. The group continued with plans to start an annual lecture series and an anthology of his writings. The first lecture on the issue of Decent Work and Basic Income was also held at the YWCA a year later on November 2, 2017.

Since the Legacy Planning Group decided that the theme of “Social Commons” required a more complete treatment, a longer time for planning was required to prepare for this upcoming event, “The Social Commons: Transformational Thinking on Social Solidarity for the 21st Century,” a public lecture on the evening of Thursday, November 14. The Social Planning Network of Ontario is the lead sponsor for this event.

We also wish to thank the excellent resource people who have agreed to give their time to offer their thinking about the Social Commons Framework in the public lecture. As well, of course, special thanks to Dr. Francine Mestrum for her effort to be with us as keynote speaker and to help us explore the potential of a social commons framework.

Following this event, the Legacy Planning Group will complete the anthology of Marvyn’s writings with commentaries and reflections on the relevance of Marvyn’s thinking to today’s policy context. Click here to download a draft of the table of contents for the forthcoming anthology.
